Putin announces potential nuclear plant in Kyrgyzstan

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday indicated that Kyrgyzstan may construct its first nuclear power plant during a meeting with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov in Bishkek.

Putin said that the project could employ advanced small modular reactor technology, emphasizing its safety and environmental standards: "Rosatom (Russian nuclear industry company) is implementing a large-scale reclamation program for uranium mining sites (in Kyrgyzstan). The possibility of constructing the republic's first nuclear power plant using advanced Russian technology—small modular reactor technology—is being explored, which, I emphasize, meets the most stringent safety and environmental protection requirements."

In addition to nuclear energy, the two countries plan to build a large solar power plant in the Issyk-Kul region and a modern combined heat and power plant in northern Kyrgyzstan, according to Putin.

During his state visit, Putin said Moscow and Bishkek are preparing to sign multiple agreements covering trade, economic, educational, and migration matters. He noted a “joint policy statement” that sets priorities for strengthening the strategic partnership: "The agenda for our talks is quite extensive... [these documents] represent key objectives for expanding cooperation across multiple areas."

Highlighting bilateral trade, Putin said about 97% of payments between the two countries are made in national currencies and both sides are exploring new options for “mutual settlements.” He noted: "Russia is Kyrgyzstan's leading trade and economic partner. Last year, trade turnover increased by 13.6% to a record $4.1 billion. It also increased by another 17% between January and September." Russian investments in Kyrgyzstan have reached nearly $2 billion.

President Japarov added that the number of Russian companies operating in Kyrgyzstan rose to 1,800 last year. Putin’s visit coincides with the upcoming Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) summit in Bishkek on Nov. 27, where regional security and cooperation will be key topics.

"My colleagues and I are very pleased to be in friendly Kyrgyzstan," Putin said, noting that his visit comes ahead of the CSTO Collective Security Council meeting.
