Russia unveils ten-year plan to modernize nuclear, air defense systems

(MENAFN) Russia is set to enhance its nuclear triad and advance the development of a comprehensive air defense system as part of its state armament program for 2027-2036, according to reports from the Kremlin on Friday.

"Special attention is being paid to building up the capabilities of the ground forces, maintaining and modernizing the nuclear triad, developing a universal air defense system, and increasing the export potential of Russian weapons and equipment," the announcement stated.

The State Armament Program is a long-term planning framework outlining the development, production, and upkeep of military hardware to ensure combat readiness. Updated every five years and spanning a decade, the program addresses both current and anticipated threats to national security.

As of December 2025, the parameters for the 2027-2036 cycle have been finalized and are awaiting official approval. Objectives include systematic modernization of the armed forces, informed by practical combat experience and evolving global security challenges.

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently highlighted that the country’s nuclear forces are now 92% modernized, asserting that “no other power in the world has reached such a level.”

The announcement comes shortly after reports that the Oreshnik hypersonic missile system was placed on combat duty earlier this month, signaling ongoing advancements in Russia’s strategic capabilities.
