S. Korea Announces Plans to Build Two Nuclear Reactors by 2038
At a Seoul press briefing on Monday, Climate Minister Kim Sung-whan announced the government would advance all required approvals to finish constructing two major nuclear facilities during the 2037-2038 timeframe, adhering to the blueprint established in the 11th basic plan from the prior administration.
Reducing carbon output from the energy sector necessitates scaling back electricity generation from coal and liquefied natural gas sources, Kim explained.
"Therefore, we need power system operations centered on renewable energy and nuclear power," he added.
Recent polling data reinforces the initiative: two separate government-commissioned surveys released last week revealed approximately 80% of participants believe nuclear energy is essential, while 60% back the expansion proposal.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), the state-owned utility, will shortly launch competitive bidding to identify potential host municipalities for both reactors, with selection anticipated by 2027.
According to ministry officials, KHNP plans to secure regulatory clearance from the nuclear safety oversight body by 2031, enabling construction completion within the 2037-2038 window.
