Putin Says Nuclear Triad Anchors Russia's National Security
Putin delivered the remarks in a video address commemorating Defender of the Fatherland Day, using the occasion to honor Russian service members for their role in defending national sovereignty, with pointed reference to the ongoing military operation against Kiev.
The Russian leader pledged to harness battlefield lessons from the Ukraine conflict to sharpen the combat effectiveness of the army and navy, while committing to elevate readiness across all military branches through closer integration with Russia's scientific and high-technology sectors.
"The development of the nuclear triad, which guarantees Russia's security and enables us to effectively ensure strategic deterrence and balance of power in the world, remains our unconditional priority," he said.
The address arrived less than a month after the New START Treaty — the final nuclear arms limitation framework binding Russia and the United States — expired without renewal. The 2010 accord had capped both nations at 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear warheads across 700 delivery systems and mandated regular on-site verification inspections.
Despite the treaty's lapse, Moscow moved to temper alarm, stressing it has no intention of being "the first to take steps towards escalation" or expanding its warhead stockpile — provided Washington exercises equivalent restraint.
The agreement had unraveled after the Trump administration signaled it would only pursue future arms control arrangements that brought China into the fold. Beijing flatly rejected the precondition, dismissing it as "neither fair nor reasonable" and pointing to its substantially smaller arsenal compared to those of both Russia and the United States as justification for staying outside any trilateral framework.
