Kyiv Rejects Russian Claims of Drone Strike on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
In a statement released late Saturday, officials in Kyiv dismissed the allegations, describing them as “baseless accusations,” and argued that the claims amount to “another information operation” designed to divert global attention from Russia’s continued control of the plant amid the war.
The statement further questioned the logic behind the allegations, stressing that Ukraine would have no reason to target its own nuclear infrastructure. It said: “as always, the Russian accusations lack logic: it is not clear for what purpose Ukraine would strike its own nuclear power plant, located on its own territory, which it seeks to return to its sovereign control.”
The Ukrainian side also accused Moscow of obstructing international oversight at the site, saying it has not granted inspectors unrestricted access to all parts of the facility.
It added: “A state that does not allow international inspectors into certain areas of an occupied nuclear facility is now demanding that the world trust its own reports about events at the same facility.”
Overall, Kyiv maintained that the accusations are part of a broader attempt to shape the narrative surrounding the contested nuclear site, which remains under Russian control according to reports.
