Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Plant Restored After 3-Day Power Crisis

(MENAFN) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced Saturday that the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has been successfully reconnected to Ukraine's power grid following emergency repairs to the Ferosplavna backup power line — ending one of the facility's longest-ever blackouts.

The three-day outage began Wednesday night after an attack on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River severed the plant's 330-kilovolt (kV) connection, leaving its six offline reactors dependent solely on emergency diesel generators to maintain critical cooling operations.

It was the 19th recorded instance of complete off-site power loss at the facility since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.

In an official statement, the agency warned that broader safety work remains far from complete.

"In other efforts crucial for nuclear safety, the IAEA is continuing to observe repair activities at the Zaporizhzhya Thermal Power Plant (ZTPP) switchyard as well as de-mining work in another frontline area close to the ZNPP to also enable repairs of the site's main power line, the 750 kV Dniprovska, that has been disconnected since March," it said in the statement.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stressed that restoring both power lines and completing the switchyard repairs are essential to securing stable off-site electricity for the ZNPP and averting a potential nuclear catastrophe.

Grossi also raised alarms over a sharp uptick in nearby military operations, warning of activity "that is further jeopardizing key nuclear safety principles, and he reiterates the necessity of maximum military restraint near all nuclear facilities."

Meanwhile, Russian-appointed administrators at the plant alleged that Ukrainian forces had struck a transport workshop within the facility's complex. Kyiv has yet to comment on Russian claims.

IAEA monitors have maintained a continuous on-site presence at the ZNPP since September 1, 2022. The plant itself has remained under Russian military control since March of that year.
