New solar grid strengthens Karrau’s essential services

The electrical interconnection of several public buildings in Karrau, Region Seven, to a 41.5–kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid, supported by a 187-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery energy storage system (BESS), has been completed, strengthening the community’s access to reliable electricity.

The system will provide continuous electricity to 13 public buildings, including the primary school, health centre, teachers’ quarters and nursery school.

The battery storage system allows the facilities to maintain electricity supply day and night, supporting the uninterrupted delivery of essential services.

During an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Monday, Toshao Shane Cornelius said the development will strengthen the capacity of public institutions to serve residents.

“Having access to reliable electricity would really help in the delivery of services, whether government or if the village comes to level. It would allow the different sectors to have access to electricity to deliver their services as well.”

Karrau has approximately 650 residents and also provides access to several mining areas and forest blocks.

According to Toshao Cornelius, the availability of dependable electricity will also contribute to improved security and clearer visibility within the community at night.

“Having this reliable electricity is very important for the services we have. It helps in terms of security, in terms of illuminating the environment as well, during the night especially.”

He further noted that the solar-powered system provides an environmentally friendly source of electricity while reducing the noise associated with conventional power generation.

Toshao Cornelius described the project as part of broader progress in Karrau, citing the establishment of the community’s secondary school as another example of the results that could be achieved through collaboration.

He explained that the secondary school was identified as an objective in the community’s 10-year village plan two to three years ago and has since become a reality in the village.

“It also shows the potential. When we work together, what could be possible? So, we really cherish and really appreciate the support that we receive from the government.”

The toshao said the continued partnership between the community and government is important as Karrau works to overcome longstanding challenges and advance its development priorities.
